Among the island’s numerous fascinating villages, Valldemosa stands out as a highlight. Known because Chopin stayed here with his lover George Sand, who was inspired to write A Winter in Majorca (a great pre-holiday read). A manuscript of Sand’s book and the piano Chopin used on his trip are on view in the village. It’s also the highest village in Mallorca, meaning it can be subject to harsh weather conditions so take a cardigan even in summer. There are plenty of beautiful walks you can take, towards the Deia mountains or the other way to Palma. An old apothecary and some lovely architecture can be seen at the 700 year old Royal Charterhouse of Jesus of Nazareth, making it well worth a visit.
The main town in the area, Manacor, is the hub of Mallorca’s pearl-making industry. You can learn about the manufacturing process my booking onto a factory tour.
