Man Who Drunkenly Sabotaged Cruise Faces 20 Years

A Californian Man’s dangerous cruise halting prank could land him in jail for up to 20 years. Rich Ehlert, 44, entered a restricted area and operated the ship’s anchor before being apprehended by FBI agents reviewing the security camera logs. He told agents that he was intoxicated at the time, though he was apparently aware enough of his actions to wear protective gloves. He claims to have understood the mechanism because of its similarity to the one on his own 50ft boat.

Ehlert faces charges of attempting to ‘damage, destroy, disable or wreck’ the ship and of ‘causing damage to a ship likely to endanger safe navigation of that ship’. An FBI agent was quoted as claiming the associated jail time could be as a high as 20 years and fines of up to $250,000 dollars could result.

Despite Ehlert’s best efforts, the Ryndham (a Holland America cruise ship) wasn’t damaged in any way. When anchors have been released in the past, propellers and rudders have been damaged, disabling the ship. In an extreme case, the hull of the ship could be punctured, with flooding of the lower decks and even wholesale sinking resulting. The versatility of cruises and cruise-liners makes Titanic-style sinking unlikely. But though the threat of sinking is unlikely on river cruises, the 1,260 passengers of this ocean cruise were alerted by the ship’s emergency alarm for a head-count. Sinking was clearly not ruled out after this one man’s reckless actions.

Caribbean cruises are operated in such density that even in the outside possibility of a sinking vessel event, any number of local ships could swiftly respond. Regent Seven Seas cruises and Cunard cruises are among a whole host of operators in the Caribbean and specifically on the Florida to Mexico run that this Holland America cruise was taking. Nonetheless, questions are naturally being asked about the tightness of ship security if Ehlert waltzed so easily into a restricted area. The idea is doubly confounding when Ehlert was apparently dressed for formal dinner, James Bond Style. Hopefully, we’ll be saying ‘never’ again to escapades like this.

Cruises: A Brief Overview

Cruising has become an extremely popular form of holidaying for families, couples and singles and is suitable for the young and old. There are a myriad of different reasons for the increase in cruises’ popularity, from the luxury ships and cabins to the wealth of beautiful, exotic destinations.
So, for all those people who’ve never been on a cruise but are considering one, here’s a quick introduction to cruises:

The first thing you should bear in mind is that if you’re looking to book a cruise, particularly if you’re aiming to get on a specific ship, you should try and book it as early as possible. Cruise ships usually offer cheaper prices in the early stages, when the ship is nowhere near full; raising their prices as the ship gets booked up. For this reason it’s good to book early, as you’ll likely save yourself a fortune. Very popular ships will also fill all their places much quicker than you might expect, meaning you could end up without if you don’t book early enough. The most popular of the tour operators and ships, such as Silver seas cruises or Cunard cruises will have all their places booked phenomenally quickly (especially in summer months), so just try and keep this in mind.

It’s tough to pick which is the most suitable cruiseliner for you, as there are now so many to choose from. The two operators already mentioned are both rated very highly, as are Oceana cruises. Your best bet is to utilise a cruise line guide, which will walk you through the different operators, ships and packages, allowing you to make an informed decision.

People often seem concerned that they may get bored on a cruise ship; especially when they’re taking a holiday with small children or elderly relatives. Generally, people seem to hugely underestimate the options afforded to them by a modern-day cruise ship. The larger ships usually have on board cinemas, bowling alleys, swimming pools, skating rinks, tennis courts, rock climbing and a huge amount more. You’ll also find a huge variety of bars, restautants, spas and shopping facilities on the ship. So for those family holidays where everyone’s looking for something different, please them all with a cruising holiday.

Which Cruise Lines Shall I Select For A Family Holiday?

For a family holiday a cruising holiday would be a wonderful vacation. There are various cruise lines such as MSC cruises, Royal Caribbean cruises, Holland America cruises, Celebrity cruises and more who have large ship to cater for all ages from children to elderly. There are over 300 cruise ships to choose from 60 cruise lines but choosing the right one is always important. Cruising holidays can cost a little so you have to make sure you choose the right cruise line for the money you spend.

Below are the list of top family cruise lines at the moment. Regent cruises, Princess cruises, Holland America cruises, Royal Caribbean cruises, MSC cruises, celebrity cruises, Disney cruise line, Cunard line, Crystal cruises and Costa cruise lines.

The on board facilities are outstanding for family on all the above cruise line’s ships. The ships they have contain mini shopping centres if you would like to do some retail therapy. In the evening ships have lovely restaurants if you want to enjoy a romantic meal with your partner. There are few bars where you can enjoy lovely drinks over the summer. On board there are also programs for your children which are generally supervised. Cruise lines such as Disney have entertaining Disney characters on board to entertain the kids.

There are many more family activities, they can enjoy together. Some ships have few swimming pools, few spas and also mini mount climbing for kids and even parents. These are all fun activities which also provide educational gain. There is a baby sitting facility available, if parents want to go for a lovely meal together. On the ships there are teen centres where teenages will be able to do their thing. Cruising holiday would definitely be a great holiday for a family. So why not go on a cruise this summer.

Antarctica Contains A Wealth Of Never Before Seen Natural Resources

Cordoned off as a realm only for international scientific endeavors, Antarctica offers countless opportunities for research that can not be obtained anywhere else on the globe. Not only does this incredible ice sheet cover the land, but it also covers the sea to an extent of hundreds of miles in some places, and is what Antarctica is best known for. As big as the entire state of Texas, Ross Ice Shelf is the grandest of them all. Studies of this ice mass combined with recent measurements have concluded that this shelf is moving north approximately 1800 feet every year. You will gain a deeper understanding about arctic trips by checking out that resource.

Antarctica makes up approximately two percent of the planet’s total water and approximately ninety percent of the world’s ice. Sea level is greatly affected by the inland ice. If just a few feet were taken off the inland ice, the sea level would rise enough to cause significant disasters to low-altitude areas, like seaports.

If all this ice melted at once, then the sea levels would go up by more than 250 feet. Because of these facts, it remains of the highest importance to understand the current status of the Antarctic ice sheets. Not many people care about how the ice is moving forward or backward. It has been theorized that we can determine the history of geophysical events in the planet through the layers of ice, like the rings of a tree.

It has been proven that these layers of ice can tell us about nuclear explosions or even when lead was used in gasoline. Measurements have been taken regarding the concentration of typical lead which precipitated over the surface of the ice during the prior 60 years. According to these findings, it’s been discovered that more and more lead has become concentrated in the ice over the past ten years, and leaded gasoline being burned caused this particular phenomenon. The hope is that we can gather information that will indicate the pollution growth rate and how much we need to worry about this problem. Visit this site for further information on artic cruises.

While fish, seals an penguins all had DDT in them, polar snows showed a remarkable lack of these chemicals. The ice layers can also provide information on items from space that have breached the atmosphere and imbedded in the ice sheet over time. If it can be determined that there are patterns to the space debris within those layers, we can assist astronauts in their space exploration by predicting what types of issues they may encounter.

Most examples of living vegetation on Antarctica are lichens. Springtails and mites prove to be the most common land animals. No insects on Antarctica have flight capability; the biggest land animal is a wingless fly. The Weddell seal and penguins make their home in the surrounding ocean. When investigators took a look at the Weddell seal, they were shocked to learn that it could dive as deep as 1500 feet as it looked for sustenance.

Adelie penguins like to nest on iceless areas on Antarctica’s coasts.  When winters approaches, they migrate north. Their incredible abilities to navigate by the sun and their biological clock determining the seasons allow them to migrate with amazing accuracy. It took three Adelies ten months to travel the 2400 miles back to their rookery.  Six had been transferred. A few of them were transported by plane to the South Pole and then let go. After they emerged, they  studied their new environment, focused on the sun a bit, and then headed exactly in the right direction for their home nests.

The largest of all living things resides in the oceans surrounding Antarctica, and the productivity of the area is shown in this. Practically extinct today, this great blue whale consume around a ton of shrimp daily, and it remains five times bigger than any dinosaur which ever lived and breathed. The Arctic sports far fewer fish species than the Antarctic. An astounding fact is that 90% of the Antarctic bottom dwelling fish are not found anywhere else in the entire world, which proves how effective Antarctic Convergence really is.

Why Should You Try A Cruise In The Nile

Being a keen traveller, I’ve visited so many different places and have experienced incredible moments that just the travelling experience can provide. Having experienced great moments of awe and admiration towards the nature’s miracles. From the mighty Iguacu Waterfalls in the borders of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguy to the breath taking site of Machu Pichu and from the solitude of Sahara to the deep blue of the Aegean Sea my eyes have seen so much and my senses have experienced even more.

However, if I ever had the chance to pick up one particular moment out of all those moments I would choose the time as I spent in Egypt with a river trip in the Nile being the ultimate highlight. it is impossible to put into words all those emotions and that great energy of the powerful river that used to be as sacred as the Sun. I had never considered river cruises as I couldn’t see any point having a cruise in a river.

Until that day, I had never seen so much beauty anywhere else than into the sea, with the Mediterranean being my favourite one. Rivers were not really appealing to me although I’ve lived in cities crossed by great rivers such as the Danube and the Amazon.

So, it was during the time I was in Egypt when a good friend of mine came across various cruise deals and convinced me that we should picked one up. As he said, you may have only one chance in life for some experiences which was enough to make me give in. There are so many agencies selling Nile River Cruises at the town of Aswan that I couldn’t resist trying a river cruise for the first time.

The hours we spent in the Nile were just unforgettable. Because its mouth is located into the Mediterranean sea the whole landscape seemed familiar. Just the thought that we were traversing the world’s longest river made me shiver and think of how many people’s lives were depending on that river which stretches all the way from Egypt to Ethiopia. Only after trying it once can realise why for the Ancient Egyptians Nile was a God and not just a river.

Behind The QE2 And Her Sister

The RMS Queen Elizabeth conjures connotation of patriotic glamour and luxury dating back over 70 years and still going strong today. The Queen Victoria was in the process of being built when the American depression halted all work being done on her and she lay derelict for years. After merging with White Star, Cunard was offered a loan to continue the work on the Queen Victoria as well as starting a new ship, the RMS Queen Elizabeth.

Once completed the Queen Elizabeth was due for a royal launch into her maiden voyage. With the outbreak of the Second World War, her original designation as a luxury liner was put on hold whilst she aided the war efforts. After being credited by Churchill as being a significant help in the war efforts both the regal liners returned home relatively unscathed. It wasn’t until the mid 40’s that both the Queen Elizabeth and the Queen Mary were able to begin their original commission as ocean liners. For over 20 years these magnificent ships sailed the Atlantic symbolising the golden era of the cruise industry for Cunard Cruises.

To ensure Cunard was able to keep up with the times, it was decided the two liners needed to be replaced towards the end of the 60’s. With transportation like air travel become more accessible, sea travel needed to become both cheaper and quicker to keep up. In 1969 the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) was launched. Although smaller and cheaper than her predecessor, the QE2 still retained the glamour associated with a Cunard liner allowing her to compete with the air travel industry. After being the flag ship of not only Cunard cruises but the epitome of luxury 5 star cruises in general, she was brought by a Dubai investment company in 2007. The uncertain financial future of Dubai has halted the original plans to convert it into an opulent floating hotel. Unfortunately this has meant she has been left floating almost derelict at the moment.

In 2007 Cunard announced the launch of its third sea faring vessel to boast the Elizabeth name. With the launch of the MS Queen Elizabeth expected in the autumn of 2010 it’s promised to be the very embodiment of five star cruises and one of the most advanced ships on the water. Said to have the essence of the 1930’s in its interior decor it will exemplify the spirit and the class of its name sake predecessor.

Journey From London To Isle Of Wight

Isle Of Wight is famous for it’s landscape, beautiful seaside and its music festivals. This weekend a lot of people are planning to go to Isle Of Wight festival which starts this weekend for few days. You have to catch a ferry from Portsmouth to get to Isle Of Wight and no sorry they don’t do no luxury cruises that you can take to get to Isle of Wight (for posh people, joking).

How to get to Isle of Wight from London? To get to Isle of Wight you have to catch a ferry from Portsmouth now you have to figure out a way to get to Portsmouth. One way is obviously catch a coach to Portsmouth then get a ferry another way to catch a train to Portsmouth and finally you can always drive to Portsmouth. I would recommend you to drive to Portsmouth then take a car ferry to Isle Of Wight.

Taking your car is the best thing to do as the public transport is not good in Isle of Wight and also you will need to drive to see beautiful scenery of Isle of Wight and the best thing is it will only tkae 1 to 2 hours to drive around the whole of the island. From London all you need to do is follow M25 towards Gatwick then after few miles take M3 towards Southampton and after 50 odd miles you will need to take Portsmouth M27 exit. When you get to M27 you are about 20 to 30 mins away from Portsmouth depending on the traffic. Then take A3 which will take you to Portsmouth town centre and then you follow signs to Car Ferry. Take that route which will then bring you in a cue of cars where you will be seen by people working in Wight link to park your car and wait for the ferry of your time. Then you will be asked to drive in to the ferry park and enjoy the 40 minutes ferry to Isle of Wight. You don’t have to take silversea cruises or royal Caribbean cruises to visit Isle of Wight. In total from London to Isle of Wight it will normally take around two and a half hours.

Bag a bargain holiday with a last minute cruise

Cruises are well known as a luxury holiday choice, but they need not always come at a huge price. Travellers can bag themselves some excellent last minute cruise deals at the moment, with rates dropping as low as £50 per person per night in some instances. Seeking out a late booking can allow holidaymakers to enjoy all the luxury, flexibility and convenience offered by cruises while being happy in the knowledge that it has not cost the earth.

It is undeniable that being able to visit a range of destinations in a single trip is a unique advantage. Just 10 days can have you exploring the Med, with a visit to Greece, Turkey and Israel, or heading off to North Africa to soak up the culture in Morocco. And unlike many traditional holidays, the travelling is all part of the fun as you get to enjoy your cruise ship’s many creature comforts as you go.

For many travellers, getting value for money is a key priority. Cruise ships are sometimes considered an expensive way to travel, but this isn’t always in fact the case. The all inclusive packages found on many cruises is one element that can help to keep costs down as well as ensure the experience is as stress-free and enjoyable as possible.

Going for a last minute deal, of course, is a great way to save a substantial amount of cash. Ideally, you’ll beed to be flexible about when and where you travel to take advantage of the best deals on the market. If you are restricted on when you can go or have your heart set on a particular destination then don’t despair. You may still be able to find a discount cruise that fits the bill. Special offers are offered across a range of cruise lines and to a variety of destinations. Looking online will ensure you can quickly and easily locate the right deal for you.
