St. Augustine’s Ghostly Tours

You can go on The Ghost Tours of St Augustine, which is popular due to St. Augustine’s reputation as on of the most haunted places, which is probably related to how it is one of the oldest cities. One of the most prominent spirits on this tour is Osceola, the ghost of an old Seminole chief. The poor soul got tricked into thinking there was going to be a truce and was instead captured and held in Castillo de San Marcos during the Second Seminole War. He was relocated following his capture and later died of malaria in 1838 at Fort Moultrie in South Caroline. He was probably relocated because of the outrage his capture was sure to spark.

The hauntings that are said to be his spirit in Castillo de San Marcos, are believed to be the consequence of what ended up happening after his death. According to historical record, an Army doctor named Frederick Weedon cut off his lifeless head and embalmed it. After being lost and then found again, his head was entered into the Smithsonian Institution in Washington in 1885. The legend goes that since Osceola’s head was so mistreated and traveled so much after his death, his spirit became restless and so now he haunts Castillo de San Marcos. Tony’s Saloon, which was a morgue between 1852 and 1875 is another place you can visit, along with a stop for pirates and other questionable individuals.

The Florida Keys also has a place called Fort Zachary Taylor, where a yellow fever outbreak swept through and killed hundreds of Union soldiers in 1862. When a civil engineer named Howard England was excavating the site in the 1960′s he claimed the ghost of Wendell Gardner, a Civil War soldier, appeared before him and pointed him toward another excavation site. This site was later discovered to hold the largest collection of Civil War weapons ever found. It was later confirmed by the Garner family that Wendell had died during the yellow fever outbreak that swept through the fort during the Civil War. The tour is called The Haunting of Fort Zachary Taylor and if you take this tour both Howard England and Wendell Gardner are supposedly the ghosts that will be haunting you.
