Planes, Trains, And Automobiles, How Do You Want To Travel?

    By SkiTripper | March 15, 2010

Do you get car sick if traveling by automobile? How about if you suffer air sickness when flying to your destination? Then consider train travel. Traveling by train is a relaxing and wonderful way to get around. In return, you get to see the country side, fast and convenient transportation, as well as the ability to sit, stand, walk around that you could not otherwise enjoy in an automobile or crowed airplane. Travel by train offers you unparallel comfort.  If you are going on a long trip, the train even has bunk beds to let you get a good night’s sleep.

Even though not many people travel by train nowadays, it is an easy way to get to your destination. Making reservations is not a problem and quite simple to do. Always make sure you make your reservations a few days, if not a few weeks in advance.

When you are ready to take your train travel, make sure you prepare for your journey. Bring some snacks and drinks from home. Most trains do have dining or bar cars, but they may be more expensive. Bringing your own refreshments is a great way to stay on budget and be assured that you like what you are eating especially if you have special diet restrictions or are just a picky eater.

Despite the restrictions the types and number of items you take on a flight, trains have relatively very few. Many people even bring their own pillows and blankets if they are taking a long trip. I’ve never seen any limits to how much luggage a traveler can take, but not all train stations have porters or even any carts available, so you may have to carry your luggage.

A question you may ask is if it is a good idea to bring cash along for the train ride. You will not find an ATM on board the train, and the train may not be able to process your credit card.  While cash is always best, you might want to consider using travel checks.  If you lose your cash, it is gone.  You lose your travel checks, they can be replaced.  Remember, once you arrive at your location, you may need to tip the train porter or pay the cab driver.

While you are on the train, try to get a little exercise. Sitting for too long will not only make you stiff and tired, it could possibly lead to a serious medical condition called deep vein thrombosis. This disease can cause blood clots to form in your legs which can lead to a stroke. So make sure to get up and move! There is plenty of room on the train to talk a walk or even stretch out.

If you are taking an overnight trip on the train and find your bunk unsatisfactory, do not hesitate to ask the train staff for help. That is what they are available for and they are used to helping passengers in many different situations and requests. They are also there to help you with any medical emergencies or unforeseen events that may occur. Above all it is always best to ask if you are not sure of something as these trained professionals are there to help you. Hopefully these tips will help you have a pleasant and memorable holiday.
